What is C1500?

C1500 indicates a failure in the transfer case contact plate 'B' encoder circuit, which affects the 4WD/AWD system's ability to monitor or control the transfer case position. This is a medium-severity issue that can disable 4WD functionality and trigger warning lights, commonly reported in Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban models. Based on real data, it typically triggers when the encoder circuit has electrical faults or sensor failures.

Common Causes:

  • Electrical circuit faults in the transfer case encoder wiring or connectors (most common based on diagnostic patterns)
  • Failed transfer case contact plate 'B' encoder sensor itself
  • Corrosion or damage to wiring harnesses near the transfer case

Symptoms:

  • 4WD/AWD system malfunction or failure to engage
  • Warning lights on dashboard (often 4WD/service 4WD lights)
  • Reduced traction in slippery conditions due to disabled 4WD

I had to carry it back to the salvage yard while they worked to find an actual 1996 door for me, which worked. All I had to do was swap the interior panel and the wiring for the automatic locks (the donor vehicle didn't have power locks).

Everything was running fine until I accidentally ran down the batteries. After recharging it, it spazzed out blinking all of the dash lights sequentially except the wait to to start glow plug light when you turn the key to run the beeping beeps with the gauge lights flashing.

I have a feeling the speedometer housing from the 700R4 may not have worked on this TH400 anyways, so if anyone can elaborate further on that for me, please shed some light.

Also check for a short in the blower wiring. You never said what year vehicle we are dealing with here, but my 1996 C1500 has had some wiring issues lately, including in the blower circuit, and some broken grounds.

My DRIVERS seat (60/40 split bench) on my 1996 C1500 has this same problem. It's stuck somewhere like 1/3 of the way from the very front of the track, and only seems to slide an inch or two either way when the release is pulled.

I am talking here about the adjusting mechanism - not the tilt/slide release. I had the tilt/slide stop working on my passenger side front seat, and it was a broken cable/spring that ran between the two sides of the mechanism under the seat.

Just speculating here, but could the external oil cooler be clogged and causing a restriction in the flow of oil through the system? I also have an old GMT400 as well (1996 C1500 5.0L) and read a lot about folks bypassing the oil coolers on these older trucks to get rid of leaks and other problems.

Did the shop you took it to have a GM Tech 2 or comparable bi-directional scan tool to command the ABS module to stay open during bleeding? If not, that would be my next step.
