What is P0340?

P0340 indicates a problem with the camshaft position sensor circuit, which is critical for engine timing and fuel injection. Based on real owner reports, this code appears frequently in Ford Mustangs, Jeep Libertys, and Nissan Maximas.

Common Causes:

  • Wiring issues or poor electrical connections in the sensor circuit
  • Timing chain or belt problems affecting sensor alignment
  • Failed engine control module (ECM) or sensor power supply issues

Symptoms:

  • Check Engine Light is illuminated
  • Engine cranks but won't start
  • Rough idling or engine misfires
  • Reduced engine power or hesitation during acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy

BTW, I got a rebuilt unit here locally that has lasted longer than either of the two Ford alternators that went bad on me before that. I paid $270 total, and that included a new 8-rib pulley too.

If it's not your alternator, you would be the first person I know of that got the P0340/P0344 for some other reason. Just replace the alternator before you get stuck somewhere and have to add a tow truck bill to the cost, too.
