What is P0345?

P0345 is a high-severity powertrain code indicating a circuit problem with the camshaft position sensor on engine bank 2, which can disrupt engine timing and fuel delivery. Based on 141 reports, this issue is most common in Ford vehicles, particularly the Mustang and F-150. The average repair cost is $2043, but it can range from $0 for a DIY fix to over $4000 for major repairs.

Common Causes:

  • A faulty camshaft position sensor or its circuit, which is the primary electrical issue triggering the code.
  • Oil leaks or contamination affecting the sensor, as seen in Ford F-150 reports where the valve cover or PCV system was involved.
  • Wiring harness damage or connector issues leading to poor electrical signals from the sensor.

Symptoms:

  • The check engine light is illuminated, which is the primary indicator that triggered the diagnostic scan.
  • Engine performance issues like rough idling, hesitation, or reduced power, though specific driving symptoms are less frequently detailed in owner reports.
  • Difficulty starting the vehicle or intermittent stalling, as the incorrect camshaft signal disrupts ignition timing.

If you give it a little throttle it will clear up but does it all over again when you stop. I have changed the vct solenoid, cam phaser, and cam positioning sensor but nothing has fixed it yet.

I have changed the vct solenoid, cam phaser, and cam positioning sensor but nothing has fixed it yet. The code I get at first when this happens is p0345 followed by a p0022.

They created electrical noise that messed with the sine wave of the DC voltage and confused the PCM , thus it threw the code. An alternator can charge just fine but still have a failing rectifier.

I think we have time if he babies it. The engine has 180,000 miles on it, and so I think a cheap replacement would be justified if we plan on swapping the motor in the next year or two.

These seem pretty plausible as I can see a slack chain getting out of time with a hard rev followed by a quick slack. Parts don't seem horrifically expensive and the labor seems doable, though time consuming.

Hi, Recently got a P0345 code. this code kicked while sitting at a red light after driving the car about 15 minutes. I have been researching this code but want to throw it out here for a second opinion.

I have been researching this code but want to throw it out here for a second opinion. I have read that a faulty alternator can cause this error code tripping the camshaft position sensor error (P0345).

P0345 was a common code on 05-08 gt with an alternator that had a failing rectifier (diodes). They created electrical noise that messed with the sine wave of the DC voltage and confused the PCM , thus it threw the code.

You're looking for a sticking or stuck VCT solenoid valve caused by contamination. Refer to vehicle specific repair manual to perform component tests for the VCT unit.

Refer to vehicle specific repair manual to perform component tests for the VCT unit. A code P0345 could mean one or more of the following has happened: a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken the camshaft position sensor may have failed the PCM may have failed there exists an open circuit the crankshaft position sensor may have failed Possible Solutions With a P0345 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times.
