What is P0442?

P0442 indicates a small leak in your vehicle's evaporative emission control (EVAP) system, which captures fuel vapors to prevent them from escaping into the atmosphere. This is a medium-severity issue that won't typically affect drivability but can cause your check engine light to stay on and may lead to failed emissions tests. Based on real owner data, this code appears frequently in Honda CR-V models and triggers due to minor leaks in hoses, seals, or gas caps.

Common Causes:

  • Loose or faulty gas cap (most common initial check)
  • Cracked or deteriorated EVAP system hoses
  • Leaking purge valve or vent solenoid
  • Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor

Symptoms:

  • Check engine light illuminated (primary symptom reported)
  • No noticeable drivability issues in most cases
  • Possible faint fuel odor near vehicle

P0456 Evap Leak Monitor Small Leak Detected Leak has been detected in the evaporative system. look at those. I'd say only the P0456 would be the gas cap IF it isn't any of the hoses coming off of the carbon box back in front of the gas tank.

Hopefully he did not start chewing on wires and hoses. Start looking closely under the hood as well as in the rear, forward of the gas tank and anything that leads off from tank and EVAP canister back there.

A gas cap will not fix either of those codes. P0441 Evap Purge Flow Monitor Insufficient or excessive vapor flow detected during evaporative emission system operation.
