What is P0101?

P0101 indicates a problem with the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor circuit, meaning the sensor readings are outside the expected range for current engine conditions. This is a medium-severity powertrain issue that affects fuel delivery and engine performance, commonly triggered by sensor failures, intake leaks, or electrical problems. Based on real data, this code appears frequently in Honda Civic, Nissan Maxima, and Chevrolet Spark models.

Common Causes:

  • Faulty or contaminated MAF sensor (most common cause)
  • Intake air leaks after the MAF sensor
  • Damaged or corroded wiring/connectors in the MAF circuit
  • Dirty or clogged air filter restricting airflow

Symptoms:

  • Check Engine Light illuminated on dashboard
  • Reduced engine power or hesitation during acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy and rough idle
  • Engine stalling or difficulty starting

I am holding off on going to dealer because they were going to charge $100 for plugging in the OBD2 scanner... But I would like to reset it to see if it will go away and come back again.

I bought the car about a month ago and it has just under 73k miles. Since then I've had the SES light come on once and eventually disappear for the code p0101.

Since then I've had the SES light come on once and eventually disappear for the code p0101. The display screen reads an average of 19.8mpg and on the dash it reads 18.3 and jumps up to 18.5 every once in a while.

Back in December when the CEL came on, I took it in and the MAF sensor was replaced under warranty. Over the last weekend the CEL returned, and guess what P0101 appeared again.
