What is P0021?

P0021 indicates the intake camshaft on engine bank 2 is out of its proper timing position, being too far advanced. This is a powertrain issue of medium severity that affects engine performance and efficiency, and it is most commonly reported in the Nissan Maxima, Porsche Cayenne, and Ford Expedition. The code is typically triggered by problems within the variable valve timing system.

Common Causes:

  • Faulty variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid or oil control valve (seen in most cases)
  • Low engine oil level or poor oil quality affecting VVT system pressure
  • Worn timing chain or stretched timing components
  • Faulty camshaft position sensor providing incorrect data to the ECU
  • Issues with the engine's oil passages or clogged oil screens feeding the VVT actuator

Symptoms:

  • Illuminated check engine light, often with reduced engine power
  • Noticeable rough idle or engine misfires
  • Poor fuel economy and reduced engine performance
  • Engine may hesitate or stall during acceleration
  • Audible rattling or ticking noises from the timing cover area at startup

The car has been fine no problems other than needing the front suspension replaced which I plan on doing soon, but all the sudden it wouldn't go over 10mph and 1500rpm, pulled in a parking lot, put it in park waited like a minute then it worked fine again.

I've been getting a P0021 occasionally since I did my swap but the car runs fines. I'm thinking maybe a sensor issue since the engine came in with valve cover damage from a frontal accident..

My CEL came on over the weekend, but I haven't noticed any other symptoms. I read the codes and it produced P0011 and P0021, Intake Valve Timing (IVT) control circuit failure (bank 1 and 2).

Any ideas or suggestions on where to start with this? I've never had either one of these codes before and still going research on them as well.
